The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating after a man suffered a broken arm during a traffic stop in North Cowichan.

According to a release by the IIO, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officers were doing a National Impaired Driving check stop on Dec. 3 on Highway 1 in North Cowichan.

Around 10 p.m. they stopped a vehicle with only one occupant and the driver admitted to having consumed alcohol but would not comply with demands.

IIO says a “physical altercation” occurred and the man’s arm was broken. He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

IIO is investigating if police actions or inactions played a role in the man’s injury.
