A Greater Victoria school was added to Island Health’s COVID-19 exposure list on Wednesday night as cases in British Columbia continue to surge.

Parents, students and staff of Arbutus Global Middle School are being cautioned about possible exposures to the coronavirus in the previous week.

Arbutus Global Middle School — located at 2306 Edgelow St in Saanich — experienced a COVID-19 exposure on April 1.

“Island Health is completing contact tracing to identify any individuals that need to self-isolate or self-monitor for symptoms,” reads a social media post from the Greater Victoria School District (SD61).

There are currently nine other facilities that have been added to Island Health’s Exposures in Schools list since schools resumed following March break.

Island Health has warned students, parents and staff to expect rising school exposures in the coming weeks due to a surge in COVID-19 cases over spring break.

With a growing concern surrounding case numbers and COVID-19 variants in British Columbia, some parents have opted to pull their children out of school due to the increased risks.

An exposure is defined by Island Health as a single person with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period.
