A Vancouver Island resident is dead following a two-vehicle collision in Qualicum Bay on Friday evening, according to Oceanside RCMP.

On Nov. 25 around 7:05 p.m., police, paramedics and crews from the Bow Horn Bay Fire Department were called to the crash in the 6000-block of Island Highway West, Mounties said in a release Tuesday.

An initial police investigation shows the 31-year-old driver and lone occupant of a northbound Mazda CX-3 drifted across the centre line, colliding with a southbound Pontiac Grand Am and dying on scene.

The deceased driver lived in Bowser, while the lone occupant of the Pontiac was uninjured in the crash, police added.

“A definitive cause as to how or why the Mazda drifted into the oncoming lane has not yet been determined,” said Sgt. Shane Worth with Oceanside RCMP. “The investigation is ongoing in conjunction with an RCMP collision reconstructionist and the BC Coroners Service.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken with police is asked to call the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111, quoting file #2022-11608.
