Cougar destroyed after killing four goats on North Saanich property

The BC Conservation Officer Service says it has euthanized a cougar that killed four goats in North Saanich.

The incident happened sometime overnight Tuesday at a property near ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱/John Dean Provincial Park, according to posts on social media.

“Sadly, Conservation Officers had to euthanize a male cougar in North Saanich today after it killed 4 goats,” the Conservation Officer Service said in a statement.

“The COS encourages all livestock owners to protect their animals from predators by locking them in a barn at night, installing electric fencing and using guardian dogs.”

The service confirmed that the cougar killed was a juvenile in poor condition that showed signs of food habituation.

According to COS guidelines around human-cougar conflict response, cougars can be euthanized if they “pose a serious threat to public safety, significant property damage has occurred and/or the cougar is injured or suffering from distressed health.”
