Black bear seen on camera wandering in Mill Bay neighbourhood (VIDEO)

The wildlife sightings continue around neighbourhoods in the southern region of Vancouver Island.

A black bear was captured on a security camera around 2 a.m. on Friday morning in a neighbourhood in Mill Bay.

A resident alerted CHEK News of the black bear’s presence, which was roaming in the Deer Park / Mill Springs area.

In a video posted to Twitter by Jason Taron, a large black bear can be seen walking up a driveway, between two cars, then cutting in front of the security camera and out of view.

Taron told CHEK News that others in the neighbourhood have been talking about black bear sightings in the area for the last couple weeks.

Later in the morning, Jim Campbell sent CHEK more video of a black bear walking along Benko Road in the same area.

Campbell said the bear was near the intersection of Butterfield Rd.

In Campbell’s video, the bear can be seen turning into a driveway before being startled by the moving vehicle and crossing the road in the other direction.

This is the second alert sent to CHEK News about a wildlife sighting on Friday morning.

Also on July 17, at around 4:40 a.m., a possible cougar sighting was reported in Mount Douglas Park. The sighting was passed on to CHEK News from a hiker who was walking in the area and spotted the big cat approximately 100 meters off the trail.

In the past several months, multiple black bear sightings have been reported in areas such as View Royal, Colwood, and Elk Lake.

Most of these sightings have involved bears wandering neighbourhood streets or rummaging through garbage.

In one instance, a black bear had to be euthanized in Langford because it had become accustomed to eating garbage.
