British Columbia health officials on Monday reported 1,692 new COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths since their last update on Sept. 17.

Daily case breakdown

  • Sept. 17-18: 644 new cases
  • Sept. 18-19: 613 new cases
  • Sept. 19-20: 435 new cases

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 179,646 while the death toll climbs to 1,899.

None of the new deaths recorded were in the Island Health region.

Of the new cases, 204 were in Island Health, 239 were in Vancouver Coastal Health, 533 were in Fraser Health, 371 were in Interior Health, and 345 were in Northern Health.

There are currently 5,608 active cases in the province, and 307 people in hospital, 156 of whom are in intensive care. The provincial government’s release to the media states that there are 661 active cases in the Island Health region.

A total of 171,769 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 7,711,306 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

Island Health

According to the latest update on Island Health’s dashboard, there are 558 active cases — 34 in North Island, 203 in Central Island and 309 in South Island — on Vancouver Island.

Twenty-seven people are currently in hospital with COVID-19, 16 of whom are in critical care, according to the BCCDC’s dashboard.

Over the weekend, there were 5,762 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island. Of those doses, 102 were AstraZeneca, 3,592 were Moderna and 2,068 doses were Pfizer. There were also 1,073 new tests for COVID-19 performed in the region over the past 24 hours.

A total of 1,285,397 vaccine doses — 617,139 of those are second doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island. This includes 33,378 doses of AstraZeneca, 343,076 doses of Moderna and 908,943 doses of Pfizer.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 7,880 cases reported, 58 deaths, 346 total hospitalizations, and 7,066 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.

Editor’s note: The BCCDC lists the active case count for Vancouver Island at 675, while the provincial government’s own media release stated that there are 661 active cases, which is far more than what Island Health has reported.  There are often discrepancies between the BCCDC’s and Island Health’s figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies, however, Island Health has stated their figures are more reflective of the current situation. It’s unusual for the provincial government’s media release to not match the active case number listed on the BCCDC dashboard. CHEK News has reached out to the provincial government for clarification.
