B.C. reports 271 new COVID-19 cases, 6 deaths

British Columbia health officials on Thursday reported 271 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths over the past 24 hours, with 60 new infections linked to Vancouver Island.

None of the new deaths were in Island Health. Three deaths were in Fraser Health, two were in Northern Health and one was in Interior Health.

There are currently 255 people province-wide in hospital due to the virus, 52 of whom are in critical care. Hospitalizations declined slightly from yesterday’s figures while the number of people in critical care rose slightly.

Since Wednesday’s numbers, there have been 60 new cases of COVID-19 in the Island Health region, 30 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 54 in the Fraser Health region, 96 in the Interior Health region, and 30 in the Northern Health region.

In a statement to the media, officials also note that the coronavirus outbreak at Yucalta Lodge is now over while the outbreaks at The Heights at Mt. View and Selkirk Seniors Village remain ongoing.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 354,874 while the death toll climbs to 2,981.

Editor’s note: Actual cases may be much higher. This is because B.C. health officials have routinely discouraged people from getting tested and for many people, access to PCR testing is extremely difficult. Rapid test results are also not included in figures released to the media. Additionally, provincial health officials have previously stated that new cases are likely four to five times higher than what they are reporting publicly. B.C. no longer provides information on active cases.
