Woman taken to hospital following joint rescue from Gorge Waterway: VicPD

The Victoria Police Department has stated that a woman is in hospital after being rescued from the Gorge Waterway on Wednesday night.

According to Victoria Police, the rescue involved a passerby, VicPD officers and the Victoria Fire Department.

In a police report issued on Thursday morning, authorities claim that the incident took place just before 9:30 p.m. on September 2.

Officers were reportedly called to the Selkirk Trestle, where a woman in crisis was said to have entered the Gorge Waterway.

Once arriving at the scene, officers found that a passerby had climbed down the trestle and assisted in getting the woman to the safety of a trestle piling.

Victoria Fire also attended the scene with a marine rescue boat. Fire crews were able to work with officers and the passerby to rescue the woman, said Victoria Police.

VFD transported the woman in crisis and the passerby assisting her to a nearby dock.

According to VicPD, officers apprehended the woman under section 28 of the Mental Health Act, and transported her to hospital for assessment.

Police added that the woman and the man who assisted her were not physically injured in the Gorge Waterway incident.
