WestJet cancelled flights between Victoria Airport and Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary on Sunday due to staffing shortages.

According to the airline’s website, there were seven arrivals to Victoria, and eight departures scheduled between these cities. Of those, five arrivals and five departures were cancelled, one arrival and departure are currently delayed.

On Dec. 30, WestJet posted a statement to their website that they were facing staffing issues due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. At the time the company estimated they would be cancelling 15 per cent of their flights until Jan. 31.

“Schedule changes will be implemented over the coming days, and while consolidation is a last resort, it demonstrates the reality of the service we planned versus that we can now realistically deliver,” said Harry Taylor, interim president and CEO of WestJet Group.

WestJet in a statement to CHEK says these flight cancellations are part of those staffing issues.

As part of the daily update on cancellations, WestJet posts they cancelled 40 flights on Jan. 9.

Further, there are currently 432 WestJet employees with active confirmed cases of COVID-19.

There were two flights between Kelowna and Victoria which went ahead as scheduled.
