West Shore Parks and Recreation has announced that all outdoor facilities will be closed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Outdoor facilities in the West Shore are closing, effective immediately.

West Shore Parks and Recreation Services (WSPRS) announced in a press release on Monday that they are closing all outdoor facilities, including playgrounds, courts, playing fields, BMX track, velodrome, lacrosse box, and picnic shelter.

The closures are being done in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed more than a dozen people in British Columbia so far.

WSPRS has already closed its indoor facilities and cancelled a number of programs.

“The decision to temporarily close WSPRS outdoor facilities was made out of an abundance of caution, in response to public concerns that some playground users are not practicing social distancing as directed by B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer.
We appreciate your ongoing patience and understanding as we take measures to keep everyone safe,” reads a statement issued by West Shore Parks & Rec in a press release.

Last week, municipalities across Vancouver Island began closing down playgrounds as a result of COVID-19, however, many of them decided to keep other public areas like parks and golf courses open for the time being.
