It’s a welcome sign that summer is around the corner in Victoria — the city’s hanging flower baskets are going up once again.
Victoria’s trademark hanging flower baskets have been a capital city staple since 1937, with this year marking their 85th anniversary.
The tradition was started by parks administrator Herb Warren as a way to celebrate Victoria’s incorporation.
Since then, city staff have made sure to grow the flowers near Beacon Hill Park and hang them up every June.
According to the city, more than 1,600 flower baskets are hung downtown every June.
