Victoria man facing charges after ‘accidentally discharging’ bear spray discharged near police

Victoria police say they discovered several weapons and guns early Wednesday after a man reportedly accidentally discharged bear spray near officers.

Just after 3 a.m. Wednesday, officers in the 2900-block of Douglas Street were investigating a theft when bear spray was allegedly discharged by a man. The officers approached the man and began to search him for weapons.

VicPD said during the search, officers found two cans of bear spray, two knives and an electric stun gun. Police said officers also found break-in tools, including a cutting torch, along with fentanyl, meth and GHB. According to police, the drugs were packaged for trafficking. All the items were seized along with several cellphones and approximately $2,000 in cash.

VicPD recommended 11 charges, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, four counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of break-in tools and four counts of possession of a weapon in violation of a probation order.

The charges have been sworn and the man is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
