Parkade prices are going up in the City of Victoria.

Drivers are going to have to cough up more cash if they want to park for the entire day at City of Victoria parkades.

Victoria council has approved a price increase for daily and monthly rates at all City of Victoria-owned parkades. The rates will go from $14 $16 per day at most of the parkades downtown. The Bastion Square Parkade on Yates Street will jump $1.50 to $17.50 per day, up from the current rate of $16.

Monthly rates will also go up by 10 per cent on June 1.

The city said the move will hopefully discourage drivers who park long-term and free up more spaces for those who want short-term parking. The city is short about 400 parking spots at the moment. However, 150 to 200 spots are expected to be open once construction in the downtown area is completed.
