Victoria barbershop gives back with haircut fundraiser

A local barbershop and other businesses are teaming up to help support the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society.

Victory Barber & Brand kickstarted the haircut fundraiser for ACEH. The Victoria-based non-profit provides affordable housing and services in an effort to end aboriginal homelessness on Vancouver Island.

The fundraiser was part of a greater effort from Victory to give back to the community.

“We have been supported and cared for and carried by our community, by our business associates, our clients, our landlords,” says Victory Barber & Brand owner Joshua van Leeuwen.

“We want to turn it around and take those good feelings and that good energy and pour it back into our community.”

The money raised from the event will go towards buying the coalition a new van to help with transporting people around downtown and Greater Victoria.

“I reached out and said “what do you guys need” and they said that they were in need of a van because they’ve got a new culturally sensitive and responsible housing facility that they’re opening up in Vic West,” says van Leeuwen.

Even though the shop is usually closed on Sundays, van Leeuwen says it was an easy sell for his staff to come in on the weekend.

“I reached out to them and within minutes we had a full roster of barbers looking to give their time today,” says van Leeuwen.
