A public warning has been issued by the Victoria Police Department after receiving reports of unsolicited seed packages showing up on Vancouver Island.

According to a police report, one of these seed packages arrived at a residence in Esquimalt.

VicPD says that on Friday, September 4th, officers were informed by a woman in the 800-block of Dunsmuir Road in Esquimalt that she had received an unsolicited suspicious package from Italy.

Police say that officers attended the residence and retrieved the package, opening it as part of the investigation.

A package of seeds was found inside.

This isn’t the first instance in Canada of seed packages arriving at doorsteps.

There have been multiple reports across the country of people receiving unsolicited packages, most often from China.

The Canada Food Inspection Agency says the seeds are from a range of plant species and have postmarks from differing countries, but they appear to be low-risk.

Federal officials are instructing anyone who might receive these seeds to not plant them or dispose of them, as they could be harmful to the environment.

Instead, Victoria Police are asking the public to call the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) at (519) 691-1306 or 1 (800) 442-2342.
