Victoria police say an investigation is underway after a 70-year-old man was assaulted last week while collecting cans.

In a release, police say the man was collecting refundable containers in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue when he was assaulted by multiple people on Sept. 26.

Around 10 p.m. officers were called to the area for an assault in progress.

Video released shows a man walking when another approaches him from behind and punches him. A second person comes up and hits him again with an item in his hand. A third person runs up and sprays him with what appears to be bear spray.

In the video another man walks past holding a metal stool and VicPD says a metal stool, in addition to the bear spray and a taser were used in the assault.

The victim is not a known resident of the block, and it is not believed he knew the attackers.

Police are asking anyone with additional dashcam or CCTV footage of the area to provide it to police for the investigation.

VicPD has provided a description of one of the three suspects. He is a Caucasian man, around 5’7″ tall with a shaved head and noticeable scabs on his scalp. He was wearing a red ski-style jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the E-Comm Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1 or anonymously through Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
