Victoria police say a man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a home near Summit Park while the occupants were sleeping.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, multiple VicPD officers responded to the Hillside/Quadra neighbourhood after receiving a call about a break and enter in progress at a home located in the 3000-block of Blackwood Street.

According to the Victoria Police Department, a male suspect broke into the home through a bedroom, where the home’s occupants happened to be sleeping.

However, one of the occupants then chased the suspect out of the home and away from the property before officers could arrive.

“The man actually broke into the bedroom of that location before one of the victims awoke, chased the suspect off, and then called us,” explained Const. Cam MacIntyre of the Victoria Police Department. “They were able to provide us with an excellent description of the suspect and the suspect was located.”

While Victoria police officers and members of the Saanich Police Department’s K9 team were searching for the suspect, a call was made to 911 regarding a suspicious man who fit the description of the break and enter suspect hiding in a tree in the 2900-block of Cook Street.

Eventually, officers found the suspect, who fled on foot but was captured and arrested by a VicPD officer near Cook Street and Kiwanis Way following a foot chase.

“The officer, he might have some sore legs later today or tomorrow, but a great job by him and a great job by the watch overall to come together and take this man into custody,” said MacIntyre.

Following the arrest, officers searched the suspect and discovered that he had a weapon on him, according to MacIntyre, who said the suspect was not injured during the arrest and was taken to cells to await a court appearance.

The unidentified male suspect faces recommended charges of break and enter and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
