2 hurt after crash involving Nanaimo RCMP vehicle

A Nanaimo Mountie is recovering after the police vehicle he was in was broadsided while travelling through the Third Street and Howard Avenue intersection.

According to the Nanaimo RCMP, an officer was in his police vehicle driving westbound on Third Street at around 5:50 p.m. May 10 when he was broad-sided by a Toyota Camry that was heading northbound on Howard Avenue.

Both the officer and the motorist of the Camry, a 25-year-old woman, were taken to hospital with minor injuries while the intersection was closed for roughly an hour.

Nanaimo RCMP say witnesses told them the woman did not bother to stop at the intersection, which only has stop signs on Howard Avenue, prior to the collision, and that they have obtained dashcam footage.

They also say the officer returned to the detachment after being cleared by medical staff but was sent home to rest and recover from the incident.

It’s unclear whether the 25-year-old motorist is facing any charges or fines as RCMP say the investigation into the collision is still ongoing.
