Two dogs believed to have killed 24 sheep seized in North Cowichan

Animal control in North Cowichan has seized two dogs that are believed to have been responsible for killing over 24 sheep and one deer in late March.

North Cowichan issued a news release saying the dogs were identified as potentially being responsible for the incidents that all happened on neighbouring farms.

On March 29, the dogs are alleged to have entered a farm yard and attacked a flock of sheep. They chased, attacked, bit and mauled several of the animals.

Later on the same day, they went to another farm and attacked another herd of sheep, and killed several mature-aged ewes.

Then later a pregnant deer was attacked and killed nearby.

“A warrant was approved, and on April 17, the Animal Control Officer, two RCMP officers, and two North Cowichan Bylaw team members seized the two dogs,” the news release said. “The dogs are being held while the investigative and legal processes are underway.”

North Cowichan says upon completion of the investigation, many measures are being considered, including levying fines and other charges.

The municipality has a number of regulations for dog owners, including that all dogs over four months old must be licensed.
