A 4.2-kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) was closed in both directions between Cobble Hill and Fisher roads. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023.

A Victoria woman is dead and another person is in hospital following a single-vehicle crash that closed the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy. 1) in both directions near Cobble Hill Sunday.

The vehicle’s passenger suffered fatal injuries, while the driver was transported to hospital by paramedics, an RCMP spokesperson tells CHEK News.

“It appears to be a fatal collision involving a single vehicle that impacted a barrier,” said Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, senior media relations officer with BC RCMP.

The driver is in stable condition, according to a BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) spokesperson. They tell CHEK News that paramedics arrived on scene around 7 a.m.

A Shawnigan Lake RCMP officer was flagged down shortly after the collision occurred, according to an RCMP news release, and fire rescue crews also attended.

Though investigations are still early, RCMP say it appears the blue Nissan was travelling northbound when the passenger side of the vehicle struck the left-turn traffic signal. The vehicle then slid down the highway for approximately 100 metres before it hit a barrier and came to a rest.

By 12:30 p.m., DriveBC tweeted that the 4.2-kilometre stretch of highway had reopened after it was closed between Cobble Hill and Fisher roads.

In an earlier notice, DriveBC said an assessment was in progress and detours were in effect southbound via Cobblehill Road and northbound via Hutchinson Road East.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to please contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP Detachment at 250-743-5514.
