Suspicious item left on top of garbage can closes downtown Victoria street to vehicle traffic

A section of View Street in downtown Victoria was closed off to vehicle traffic on Tuesday morning as police responded to a suspicious item.

VicPD say they were advised around 7:35 a.m. that a large pressure cooker had been placed on top of a garbage can on the 700-block of View, between Douglas and Blanshard.

Officers determined it was likely harmless but brought in an x-ray machine to take a photo of it.

“To determine 100% that there was nothing in it, it clearly showed there was nothing inside it, and at that time we opened up the street,” said Det. Sgt. Derek Tolmie of VicPD.

“We have to err on the side of caution.”

The street reopened to traffic around 9 a.m.
