The crosswalk where the Sooke School District reported a student was struck on Dec. 12, 2019.

A student was taken to hospital Thursday morning after they were struck on Sooke Road near Edward Milne Community School.

Sooke RCMP said they were called to the school just before 8 a.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Sooke Road near the school. BC Ambulance and the Sooke Fire Department initially responded to the call.

A webcam of Highway 14 at Lazzar Road near Sooke, looking east, shows the moments after the crash.

RCMP investigators believe the student crossed Sooke Road from Lazzar Road, toward the school, when they were hit by a green westbound vehicle.

Witnesses have told police there was heavy rain at the time of the collision and it was dark. The Sooke RCMP are working to determine whether the crosswalk light was activated, or if the pedestrian was in the crosswalk.

The student was taken to a Victoria hopsital for treatment, police said.

The investigators on scene have determined that alcohol was not a factor in the collision Sgt. Clayton Wiebe from the Sooke RCMP detachment said.

The driver of the vehicle has been cooperative with the RCMP investigation and was very concerned for the injuries sustained by the victim. This investigation is still ongoing to determine what caused this collision.

According to the Sooke School District (School District 62), the collision happened prior to the start of the school day in front of the high school. Sooke School District Supt. Scott Stinson said the student was crossing Sooke Road (Highway 14) at a marked crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle at around 7:45 a.m.

“At this point we know that the student is stable. They’re in hospital. We don’t know the extent of the injuries yet,” Stinson said.

William Kempster, said when he walked up to the school Thursday morning at around 8 a.m., he saw a girl lying down on the ground near the crosswalk.

“She was hurt. All I heard was screaming at that point.”

Stinson said the district is always concerned about safe routes to school when there are crosswalks across the highway. There are crossing guards at elementary schools.

“There are four of our schools that sit along that highway. Three of them are elementaries,” Stinson said.
