Strong winds lead to cancellations on six BC Ferries routes

Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands are expected to see a brief but intense wind storm Monday evening.

Environment Canada posted a warning of strong southeast winds of 70 gusting to 90 km/h starting in the evening, but the winds should end before midnight.

“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage,” Environment Canada says in the notice. “High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.”

As a result of the windstorm, BC Ferries has cancelled sailings on six separate routes.

The 12, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. leaving Tsawwassen and 2, 6 and 9 p.m. leaving Swartz Bay have been cancelled.

The Tsawwassen to Duke Point route has two cancellations, with the  8:15 p.m. leaving Tsawwassen and the 10:45 p.m. leaving Nanaimo being cancelled.

Between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay there have been two sailings cancelled, the 8:45 p.m. leaving Departure Bay and the 10:10 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay.

Between Comox and Powell River, the 3:25 and 7:10 p.m. sailings leaving Comox and 5:15 and 8:45 p.m. leaving Powell River have been cancelled.

Two sailings have been cancelled between Quadra Island and Cortes Island. The 3:05 p.m. leaving Quadra Island and 3:50 p.m leaving Cortes Island.

The route between Quadra Island and Campbell River has had all sailings on one of its vessels cancelled. The other ferry will operate in shuttle mode until further notice.

This wind storm comes just days after a previous wind storm, which resulted in the cancellation of some BC Ferries sailings.
