A special weather statement has been issued for parts of Vancouver Island due to snow that is expected on Tuesday.

The special weather statement is in effect for the Malahat highway – from Goldstream to Mill Bay- inland Vancouver Island and East Vancouver Island – from Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.

Environment Canada said an approaching Pacific frontal system will spread precipitation across Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday. The cool airmass currently over the south coast means that snow levels are low enough that precipitation may start as snow especially over higher terrain and locations away from the water.

The weather agency said local snowfall accumulations of two to five centimetres can be expected over east Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast. Ten to 20 centimetres is possible for inland Vancouver Island by Tuesday night.

Roads connecting numerous communities throughout the regions may be impacted.
