RDN campgrounds at Descanso Bay Regional Park on Gabriola Island and Horne Lake Regional Park in Qualicum Bay will reopen on June 1.

The Regional District of Nanaimo has announced they will be reopening campgrounds in the area, beginning next month.

Starting on June 1, outdoor enthusiasts will be able to stay overnight at Descanso Bay Regional Park on Gabriola Island and Horne Lake Regional Park in Qualicum Bay.

In a release issued earlier today, the Regional District of Nanaimo said it has taken the decision to reopen camping facilities following “careful” planning and consultation with health professionals.

The RDN’s online reservation system will begin accepting reservations beginning May 25 at 7 am, for those looking to lock down a spot.

Check-in procedures at campsites have been altered and the RDN says it is imposing limits on the number of guests at its campgrounds.

Washroom facilities, however, will be open with “enhanced” cleaning protocols.

The RDN is reminding those not to visit their campsites if sick, and those who do visit to ensure physical distancing. They’re also urging people to bring their own hand sanitizer and practice “appropriate” hygiene.

Additionally, the RDN is aligning with the advice of BC health officials and asking residents to only visit parks and campgrounds close to home.

“We are counting on everyone to do their part so campgrounds can remain open,” the district said in the release.
