Comox Valley RCMP say they are investigating a suspicious fire in Courtenay.

Comox Valley RCMP say they are investigating a suspicious early-morning house fire in Courtenay.

Courtenay Fire Department Chief Don Bardonnex said firefighters were called to a fire at a single-family home in the 2300-block of Stewart Avenue at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday.

Twenty-two firefighters responded to the blaze. The fire was contained to the basement.

Bardonnex said there was one occupant home at the time and that person was not injured in the fire.

Comox Valley RCMP say the fire is not believed to be accidental and is suspicious in nature.

“The exact cause and the circumstances surrounding the fire are currently under investigation. Investigators from the Major Crime Unit are still gathering evidence in the area; however, have been able to determine that this fire was not the result of a random act,” Const. Monika Terragni, media relations officer with Comox Valley RCMP, said in a statement.
