More affordable housing is coming to Vancouver Island.

The B.C. government says 183 units of affordable purpose-built rental housing will be constructed on Vancouver Island for those with low-to-moderate incomes.

Parksville will receive a total of 87 units, 61 units are slated for Nanaimo and 35 units are anticipated in Tofino.

The affordable housing units on Vancouver Island are among the more than 600 units across planned across B.C., with funding coming from the province’s Building BC: Community Housing Fund.

“These projects will mean new, affordable homes for a wide range of people – from seniors on fixed incomes to growing families and people with disabilities,” said David Eby, attorney general and the minister responsible for housing. “There’s a lot more to do, and I look forward to working with the non-profit housing sector and all our partners to continue delivering the homes people need.”

According to the province, the 87 units that are slated for Parksville will be part of a development at 371 Alberni Hwy, with construction set to begin next month. Units are intended for seniors, people with disabilities and multi-generational families.

In Nanaimo, 53 units will be constructed at 6010 Hammond Bay Rd and are designated for independent seniors, people with disabilities and families.  An additional eight homes are planned for Indigenous families in La’lum’utul in Nanaimo and are being built in partnership with Snuneymuxw First Nation. Construction on the affordable homes in Nanaimo are expected to begin by February.

Meanwhile, 35 affordable homes in Tofino are intended for families, independent seniors and people with disabilities. Construction on those homes is not expected to begin until April.
