Police locate suspect vehicle after fatal hit-and-run in Courtenay

Mounties say investigators have identified a vehicle that’s believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred near Courtenay on Thursday night.

Just before 11 p.m. Thursday, emergency crews were called to a report of an injured cyclist along the Comox Valley Parkway near Minto Road.

A passerby was the first person to spot the injured man, and called 911 for help. Despite the best efforts of bystanders and paramedics, the man ultimately died after being transported to hospital.

On Friday morning, police asked the public for help identifying the car involved in the hit-and-run.

By Saturday afternoon, Mounties said the vehicle had been identified.

“Investigators have located the suspect vehicle involved in the collision and are continuing to process the evidence collected so far,” said RCMP in a statement.

Mounties add that the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has taken over the investigation from local police.

“While the investigation remains in its infancy, it is progressing well,” said Cpl. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP.

“Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, no further details will be shared at this time,” he said.

Investigators are still looking to speak with anyone who may have information on the crash, including dashcam video. Anyone with information is asked to call the VIIMCU tip line at 250-380-6211.

Mounties say they do not believe there is any further risk to the public.
