A high-profile Fairy Creek logging protester has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, minus 12 days served, for her role in the 2021 blockades.

Thirty-seven-year-old Angela Davidson, also known as Rainbow Eyez, who is also the deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada, was convicted of seven counts of criminal contempt in January for her participation in the old-growth logging protests.

The B.C. Supreme Court found that, after being arrested several times during the protests, Davidson ignored court orders to keep away from the blockades and to be under house arrest, as she admittedly returned to deliver food to camps, encourage others to join the protests, and chained herself to a logging gate.

During a sentencing hearing on April 4, Davidson’s lawyer called for her sentence to be time served plus 75 hours of community service, while the Crown called for 51 days of jail time, minus 12 days served, and community service.

On Wednesday, Davidson was sentenced to 60 days in jail, minus the 12 days already served, plus 75 hours of community service.

Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson stated in his reasons for the sentence.

“Without the rule of law there is only the will of might,” Hinkson told the court.

“She endangered herself and others by her conduct,” he continued.

Then, Hinkson added that Davidson, “used her breaches as publicity for her cause.”

In a statement, the Green Party of Canada said Davidson had its “unwavering support” and that the party calls for an end to all old-growth logging in Canada, as well as an end to the criminalization of “ecological advocacy.”

“As Greens we stand in solidarity with our brave Deputy Leader Rainbow Eyes who is to lose her freedom for the ‘crime’ of trying to protect the old growth forest the provincial government had said it would protect from logging – and then did nothing,” said Leader Elizabeth May.

“We can ‘stand in solidarity’ but it is only Rainbow Eyes who goes to jail – braver than all of us,” she said.
