No charges against West Shore RCMP officers after woman’s jaw broken in custody

The B.C. Prosecution Service (BCPS) determined evidence does not meet necessary standards to charge three members of the West Shore RCMP involved in an in-custody incident that led to injuries four years ago.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) looked into the events that took place in the early morning hours of March 16, 2014.

The prosecution service announced Friday evidence does not support charges being approved, saying they “would not be able to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the officers committed a criminal offence or used excessive force in the administration or enforcement of the law.”

An intoxicated female suspect was arrested for public intoxication after she failed a roadside breath test and refused a taxi ride home.

She was taken to the West Shore RCMP detachment to be processed and held in custody until she was sober.

Shortly after arriving, the woman became aggressive and tried to hit one of the officers.

In an effort to restrain the suspect, officers took her to the ground where she struck her chin that caused a broken jaw and a cut.

The IIO submitted a report to the BCPS when they finished their investigation into the actions of the officers involved.
