It is believed that the Nanaimo NightOwls baseball club has just made sports history by hiring a legally-blind team photographer.

Angela Waldick, a resident of Vancouver Island, has been named the official photographer for the West Coast League expansion team.

According to the NightOwls, the Island-raised Waldick lost sight in her right eye five years ago following a household accident.

Despite partially losing her vision, the mother of two has continued to run a small business based in Nanaimo called Nightengales Photography.

“This has not stopped me from pursuing my passion of making others feel great about how they look. I soak up every piece of knowledge I can, learning how to perfect my craft,” said Waldick in regards to her injury.

Once it is safe for the West Coast League to resume action, the NightOwls say Waldick will be present during games at Serauxmen Stadium as well as at the team’s community events.

The Nanaimo NightOwls, officially named last summer, have yet to play an official West Coast League game, so the club feels Waldick will play an important part in “chronicling” its debut season.

“This is a major step for me and my business, and I’m excited to join the NightOwls — and my kids are even more excited,” said Waldick. “This is a major addition to Nanaimo summers, and I get to take the pictures at such a historic stadium and in the community. Those who know me know it doesn’t get any better than this.”

The team says it has conducted its own research, however, has been unable to find another instance of team or sports media involving a legally-blind photographer, meaning Nanaimo and Waldick are possibly pushing the boundaries of history.

“This is an inspiring story of someone who overcomes all obstacles,” said Jim Swanson, Managing Partner/GM of the NightOwls. “Angela knows the community, she has an impressive and varied portfolio and she more than deserves this opportunity.”

According to Swanson, Waldick will keep “every penny” of her NightOwls photography sales.

The Nanaimo NightOwls are tentatively slated to tee off for the first time ever this summer, depending on the current COVID-19 situation.
