BC Ferries has cancelled numerous sailings between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island on Saturday due to crewing issues.

Sailings between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island via the Island Gwawis ferry have been cancelled. This includes all sailings scheduled between 11:40 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“We require a specific number of crew members on board the vessel to ensure the safety of our passengers in the unlikely event of an emergency and to comply with Transport Canada regulations,” the company said in an update on its website, adding. “The decision to cancel a sailing in these circumstances is made when we have exhausted all options to find replacement crew.”

The 9:20 a.m. sailing from Nanaimo and the 9:55 a.m. sailing from Gabriola via the Island Kwigwis ferry were cancelled this morning due to a crew shortage as well. However, BC Ferries says the Island Kwigwis has resumed regularly scheduled sailings between Nanaimo and Gabriola since 10:30 a.m.

BC Ferries says it apologizes for the inconvenience the cancellations may cause and said if a replacement crew becomes available, they will notify customers immediately.
