Smoke is seen rising from a house fire on May 1, 2019 on Sims Avenue.

Saanich police said they have made an arrest in connection with a house fire on Sims Avenue Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to a structure fire just before 3 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke billowing out of the home at 276 Sims Avenue. Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire but the damage was extensive. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Saanich police also responded to the fire and upon further investigation, determined it was suspicious. Police then found and arrested a 24-year-old Saanich man for Arson.

Police said they later learned the man was associated with the residence. Saanich police did not release his name but said the man is in custody and is scheduled for a court appearance later Thursday.

“The investigation continues. Our detectives are still gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses who were in the area at the time”, Sgt. Damian Kowalewich said in a statement.

The total value of the damage caused by the fire is not known at this time, police said.
