Chris Coleman, who has been a Victoria city councillor for more than two decades, announced Tuesday he won’t be seeking re-election in October’s municipal election.

Coleman is currently serving his sixth term. During his time on council, he has served under four different mayors and with six different councils.

“I have learned much from these leaders and offer profound thanks for all their guidance, their support and their camaraderie,” Coleman said in a statement.

“During the past decade, I have also been fortunate to serve on the board and executive of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). This has allowed me the unique opportunity to address community issues, and to share the experiences & insights of the Capital Region at the national and international levels. This, I believe, has opened up opportunities for much greater engagement in building better, safer communities for everyone.”

He said he is moving on to other endeavours and will remain committed to the community. He also thanked his family and close friends, including his wife Judith, for their guidance through all of his terms.

“I extend my sincere appreciation to all on council and city staff who were willing to work collaboratively in seeking resolutions to often ‘sticky’ issues; making tough concessions that allowed pragmatic resolutions to evolve. Such is the noble goal of “good governance,” Coleman said.
