Longtime Metchosin councillor dies in fatal collision

The District of Metchosin is mourning a local councillor who died Saturday in a collision in Surrey.

On Monday, the district announced that Moralea Milne “suddenly passed away” on Saturday. Mayor John Ranns confirmed she was the 68-year-old woman who died after a crash at 184th Street and 40th Avenue in Surrey at around 10:30 a.m. on July 28.

According to police, the woman and a 73-year-old male passenger were going north on 184th Street when they were struck by a driver in a vehicle going east on 40th Avenue. A 37-year-old man was driving the other vehicle. The 73-year-old man and the 37-year-old man were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Today is a very sad day for everyone who knew and worked with Moralea, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family now,” Mayor John Ranns said in a statement.

“Moralea made many thoughtful contributions to important policy decisions on council and her voice will be missed. She cared deeply about Metchosin and the environment and in addition to being an outstanding councillor, served her community well in many other ways.”

Milne was first elected to the District of Metchosin in 2008. During her tenure, she served as the Finance and Administration Committee Chair, the Finance and Environment Committee Chair and the Environmental Advisory Committee. She was also a West Shore Parks and Recreation Society board member, a CRD Regional Housing Trust Fund member and a Greater Victoria Public Library Board member among others.

“She was an active and dedicated member of council. She was known for her diligence in all financial matters, always with the goal of getting the best value for taxpayers as well as being instrumental in solidifying the great relationship between Metchosin Council and Beecher Bay Scia’new First Nation,” Ranns said.

“Our hearts go out to Moralea’s family. She leaves behind a wonderful and strong family and I know they will be a great source of comfort and support to one another.”

The flag is being lowered at Metchosin’s municipal hall to honour Milne. The date and details of a celebration of life have yet to be finalized. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Metchosin Foundation.
