Land purchased for new water treatment plant in Comox Valley

A 15.7-hectare parcel of land has been purchased by the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) for the construction of a new water treatment plant.

The land is adjacent to Lake Trail Road near the Puntledge River in Courtenay and was bought from Comox Timber for $372,160.

“Acquiring the land for the new water treatment plant is an important milestone for the overall water treatment project,” Chair of the CVRD Water Committee Bob Wells said.

“It brings us one step closer to having a modern water treatment system that meets current health standards and ensures safe, high-quality drinking water.”

The CVRD says the property was identified because gravity could feed the water distribution system, eliminating the need for several pump stations.

Comox Valley residents will be asked to authorize borrowing money to complete the water treatment project in the upcoming Alternative Approval Process.

The anticipated cost of the project is an estimated $110.6 million with construction to start next year.

The district has installed a temporary UV treatment system at the existing water treatment plant, saying it will reduce boil water advisories by nearly 80 per cent.

The new water treatment facility is scheduled to be operational in 2021.
