Island Health reports cluster of coronavirus cases at Nanaimo elementary school

An elementary school in Nanaimo is dealing with a cluster of coronavirus cases.

Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District announced on social media Tuesday evening that another student or staff member at Cedar Elementary recently tested positive for COVID-19.

The potential dates of exposure are May 17, 18, 19, and 21.

As a result, Island Health has now classified the exposure event at Cedar Elementary as a cluster.

Island Health defines a cluster as “two or more individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period.”

Cedar Elementary — located on Gould Road in Nanaimo — was added to Island Health’s exposure list last week after reporting a positive test with possible exposure dates being May 17 and 18.

Island Health says a child can continue to attend school if a parent or guardian does not receive a phone call or letter from public health.

Should a parent or guardian see a notification on Island Health’s school exposure site, it does not necessarily mean their child has been exposed to COVID-19.

There are currently five schools on Island Health’s exposure list, with only one other school — Highlands Secondary in Comox — experience a cluster of cases.
