The inaugural Island FanCon event took over City Centre Park in Langford over the weekend featuring big-name visitors, workshops and much more.

Celebrity guests at the convention included Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson from Game of Thrones, Emily Swallow from The Mandalorian, and Jess Darrow from Disney’s Encanto.

Swallow tells CHEK News she was amazed by the effort that people put into their cosplays.

“I get to wear really cool costumes, but I don’t make them,” Swallow said. “To see the artistry that people put into their cosplay is just so inspiring.”

Darrow, who voiced Luisa in Encanto, says she was excited to be in Victoria for the convention.

“I feel like I’ve really been bonding with everyone and I’m honestly sad for it to be over,” Darrow said.

The two-day event attracted a wide variety of attendees of all ages.

Murray Greissel says he has been involved in cosplay for 10 years now and was happy to attend the Island convention.

“I’ve been building and creating props and costumes since 2014. I came today dressed as the police from the movie that just had its 30th anniversary, The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis,” says Greissel.

Over 3,000 people attended Island FanCon in Langford.
