WATCH: Saanich firefighters help a horse up on Nov. 14.
A horse was rescued by Saanich firefighters after she slipped in some mud and lost her footing on Beaver Lake trail.
Four firefighters from the Saanich Fire Department were called to Beaver Lake Trail on Nov. 14 at around 10:30 a.m. after a woman fell off a horse that had slipped. The woman was wearing a helmet and was not injured during the fall.
Capt. Darwin Schellenberg with the Saanich Fire Department said the elderly horse, named Princess, fell when her horseshoes couldn’t get a grip on the ground.
“Her legs were uphill,” Schellenberg said.
“I guess she couldn’t get up on her own.”
The crew was able to turn the horse around so she could get her legs on some dirt and brush. Schellenberg said Princess did quite a bit of the work on her own.
“She didn’t seem to be in any distress,” Schellenberg said.
“It was nice to be able to help.”
Schellenberg estimates the fire department gets called to incidents involving a horse around once a month on average.
“It’s more often than you think.”
Teamwork, ingenuity and compassion all come to mind when I think of our @SaanichFire #firefighters and their service when called.
