Hikers look to raise funds for local families impacted by cancer

The fifth and final Moving Mountains event will see experienced hikers take on Victoria’s three highest mountain peaks for cancer funding.

The annual hike takes place November 18 and covers 27 kilometres through Mt. Finlayson, Jocelyn Hill and Mt. Work. Participants will be on trails for 10-to-12 hours and the event is only open to registered hikers.

Shane Flamand created Moving Mountains in 2013 to raise funds for his nephew Zack Downey, who was battling Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Flamand decided this year’s hike, which is now in tribute to Zack after his death in May 2014, will be the final one.

“It allows me to heal from the loss of Zack and focus on my own health and wellness,” Flamand said in a media release.

“Thank you so much for all you guys have done. I truly appreciate it from the bottom of my heart and my family thanks you as well.”

The proceeds raised by Moving Mountains will go to selected recipients by Shared Hope Society, an incorporated non-profit organization.

Shared Hope Society provides non-medical expense and education funding to those affected by cancer.

Shared Hope Society says a self-employed single mother of two boys, including a 13-year-old living with lymphoma, will be one of the recipients of this years Moving Mountains hike.
