Heavy rain, strong winds forecast for West, North Vancouver Island

West Vancouver Island and the western portions of North Vancouver Island are forecast to receive heavy rain and strong winds on Friday and Saturday.

There is expected to be between 100 and 150 mm of rain for those regions and southwest winds of 70 km/h gusting to 90 or 100.

“A Pacific frontal system will bring heavy rain and strong winds to the West Vancouver Island and North Vancouver Island until Saturday morning,” Environment Canada says in a weather alert.

“The heavy rain and strong winds will ease late Saturday morning as the system weakens. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

BC Ferries announced it had to cancel a number of sailings between Campbell River (Vancouver Island) – Quathiaski Cove (Quadra Island) due to the high winds. Sailings between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. have been cancelled, as of 8:45 a.m.
