After reports of a male being seen with a handgun in Nanaimo last Friday, a police search led to a 23-year-old man being charged with a dozen firearm and weapons-related offences.

Taylor Dylan Chesal was arrested by Nanaimo RCMP Friday night at a home in the 600 block of Seventh Street where the incident occurred and was held in custody over the weekend.

Police say they were advised Chesal had been seen with the handgun and was prohibited from possessing firearms due to previously documented incidents.

Officers went to the home and after numerous phone calls, Chesal walked out of the house and was arrested without incident.

The gun in question was not found on him.

After a search warrant was granted, police seized an older model revolver, two boxes of ammunition and an ammunition press, gun powder, a gun holster and ammo for shotguns and rifles.

A set of brass knuckles was also taken by officers.

Chesal was in provincial court Monday and formally charged with possessing a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon and a number of ammunition related charges.

Chesal was granted bail and is scheduled to be back in court April 10.
