‘Glad she said yes’: Victoria couple gets engaged on kiss cam at Royals hockey game

Fans were in for an exciting night at the Victoria Royals game on Wednesday, both on and off the ice.

A Victoria couple took the opportunity to use the Valentine’s Day game to get engaged.

George Antsey organized with the Royals to get on the kiss cam that evening, but with an added surprise.

After sharing a happy kiss for the camera, George dropped to one knee, shocking his partner Juliette.

“I was confident the entire time,” George told CHEK News on Thursday. “I’m glad she said yes.”

Juliette said she was surprised by the proposal, but was happy to say yes, even in front of a crowded arena.

“I’m the type of person who would say no in front of a crowd if I didn’t want to,” she said with a laugh.

That being said, the couple notes they were “very focused on each other” in the moment and “kind of forgot there was several thousand other people there too.”

Planning and preparation

George says the surprise proposal took a “fair amount of planning” to pull off.

“It’s really simple, Juliette really likes hockey and I just thought it would be a great opportunity to propose on the kiss cam, and it just worked out,” he said.

Juliette was also quick to add that “the Royals are the best!”

The couple has been together for about a year, and George says he knew she was the one “the moment I met Juliette.”

They also credit their mutual friend, local musician Brett Smith-Daniels, with introducing them to each other and playing a matchmaker of sorts.

“He deserves a lot of credit,” said George.

The Victoria couple says there’s no firm plans yet on where and when they’ll tie the knot. In the meantime, they’re celebrating the engagement and discussing some of their favourite places and potential venues for a wedding.
