Fortis, Sidney Fire respond to gas line damage

Fortis BC says it has crews on scene for damage to a gas line in the 2000-block of Malaview Avenue, and Sidney Fire evacuated two buildings as a precaution.

In a tweet, the Town of Sidney says the gas leak has been resolved and the evacuated residents are allowed to return to their homes.

Nicole Brown, spokesperson for Fortis BC, says crews received a call about the damage around 9:50 this morning.

She says at this point it is known the line sustained damage from a third party, and the crew’s first task will be to stop the leak. That may mean crews have to turn off gas in the area, resulting in a loss of service to nearby properties.

The line was damaged in a residential area, and Brown says while she can’t give an estimate for when the situation will be resolved, these types of situations usually resolve within the same day.

People in the area may smell natural gas as a result, but Brown says if people believe the smell is coming from inside their house to go outside.

WorkSafe BC has confirmed to CHEK News that it has been notified of the incident, and a WorkSafeBC Officer is attending the scene.

A spokesperson said they cannot confirm why WorkSafe has been called to attend.
