First snowfall of the season blankets Mount Washington

CHEK
WatchThe first snowfall of the season has blanketed the Comox Valley's Mount Washington in white today, and it surprised visitors who weren't expecting the white stuff so soon.

Jim Shoquist was expecting to enjoy the fall colours on his hike atop Mount Washington Sunday.

“It’s getting away from the city,” said Shoquist.

“And having some fresh air and solitude,” he said.

But he got a lot more than he was expecting when overnight rain turned into the first real snowfall of the season on the Comox Valley mountain.

Giving those lucky enough to find themselves up there the first real taste of winter on the mountain.

“It’s refreshing and exciting,” said Alexis Francis. “First snow, because snow’s awesome. It’s like it’s kind of cool that it’s snowing already.”

“Having just fun, playing in it and going in it,” said Shoquist.

About five centimetres of snow fell on Mount Washington overnight Saturday and more is on the way with cold temperatures and rain forecast all week.

The snow was enough to bury windshields, and create the first light blanket on hills that will host thousands of skiers and snowboarders in a few months time.
