A fire at a sushi restaurant in Campbell River Sunday night caused extensive damage, according to the Campbell River Fire Department.

The fire was reported at Miki’s Sesame Sushi, located at 871 Island Highway, at 10 p.m. Sept. 13. The restaurant is on the second floor of a three-story building.

When firefighters arrived, flames were coming out of the front window and the ventilation in the roof.

“There was heavy smoke and flames showing from the second floor of the building,” said Campbell River Fire Chief Thomas Doherty. “Crews deployed a couple of attack lines to the exterior, knocked the fire down and then we transitioned to an interior attack.”

The Campbell River Fire Department said 22 firefighters responded to the fire. The flames were put out fairly quickly, but firefighters were on the scene for several hours.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. There is extensive damage in the kitchen area of the restaurant, where it is believed the fire originated, according to the fire department.

“The kitchen area at the front of the building is the primary area of origin we’re focusing on,” added Doherty.

There is smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the building. The other offices in the building include an aquatics lab, dental office and an insurance office.

Insurance adjusters and restoration crews remained at the scene of the fire for much of the day Monday.
