Environment Canada issues strong wind warning for North Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii

Environment Canada has issued a strong wind warning for exposed sections of North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii on Saturday morning.

According to the weather agency, winds are expected to clock between 90 and 110 km/hr over exposed areas, beginning in the early hours of February 26.

In a weather statement, Environment Canada said that an intensifying pacific frontal system will sweep through coastal BC bringing strong southeasterly winds to the area.

The strong winds are expected to last throughout the day and into the evening on Saturday. At that time, the winds will shift southwesterly and weaken as the cold front passes through.

Environment Canada adds that after the initial windy period, a second system is set to roll into the area on Sunday night, bringing more strong southeasterly winds.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur,” reads a statement from Environment Canada. The agency adds that “high winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.”
