Gas main in Duncan repaired after being hit by BC Hydro crew

A gas main that was damaged by a BC Hydro crew working in Duncan has been repaired, according to FortisBC.

Canada Avenue from Trunk Road to Coronation Avenue was closed after the main was hit, and FortisBC crews are now restoring service to the nearby businesses that had it turned off.

Prior to the gas leak, the city had shared that Kenneth Street adjacent to Canada Avenue in Duncan would have single-lane alternating traffic so BC Hydro could complete work.

Ted Olynyk, spokesperson for BC Hydro, confirms it was BC Hydro crews that hit the gas line. He says crews had received plans of the gas lines in the area, but this line was not shown on the plans provided to the team.

“Crews were working on Kenneth Avenue in Duncan, doing some underground related work. And unfortunately, they struck a gas line in the area,” he said.

Olynyk says there were no injuries.

Fortis crews were called shortly after noon and had arrived on scene by 12:26 p.m.
