CRD warns of scam callers pretending to be regional district

The Capital Regional District is warning residents of scammers pretending to be the regional district.

In a notice Friday, the CRD said it “recently received reports of fraudulent calls impersonating the CRD.”

The regional district stresses that it will never call residents and request personal information, such as credit card information, out of the blue.

If you do receive a call from the CRD that seems suspicious – since scammers can sometimes “spoof” their numbers to make it appear like it’s coming from the regional district – the CRD recommends that you hang up immediately.

“To verify the authenticity of any such call, please dial our publicly published main phone number at 250-360-3000,” said the CRD.

The notice came the same day that Saanich police warned of an increase in a romance or investment scam that’s often referred to as “pig butchering.”

The scam involves convincing victims to deposit money into a fake cryptocurrency investment website or app.

The police department said it recently received reports of the scam in the community, particularly among residents of Chinese descent.
