CRD launches project to replace SEAPARC skate park

The skate park in Sooke is 27 years old, so plans are now in the works to look at replacing it, according to the Capital Regional District (CRD).

The skate park was built in 1997 and is now operated by the Sooke and Electoral Area Parks and Recreation Commission (SEAPARC), which is a CRD board.

In a release, SEAPARC says the skate park is a well-loved community asset, but it is also in need of repair.

“The skate park renewal project is key to ensuring the longevity of this much loved community asset that is in significant need of repair,” Maja Tait, Sooke’s mayor said in a news release. “Anytime we can plan and support outdoor spaces like these, particularly ones that are a recreational hub for our youth, it is a great investment.”

Radius Contracting is leading the concept design for a replacement skate park, and there will be an “interactive design workshop” the public is invited to attend to help share ideas for the future skate park.

“The skate park is an integral part of Sooke’s recreation amenities, and these improvements further our commitment to supporting sport and recreation for all members of our community,” Al Beddows, the board chair of SEAPARC said in a news release.

The workshop will be held on May 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. After that, an online survey will run from May 7 to 28.

Almost one year ago, another skate park opened in the region. Seven years after the skate park at the former Belmont Secondary School was closed, a new skate park opened near the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre.
